Ginger and Rosa

Released: 19/10/2012 Released in key cities

British filmmaker Sally Potter has covered everything from a time-traversing, cross-gender redhead (the brilliant Orlando from 1992) to fashion bloggers (2009's Rage), and although her output is considered patchy, she is nothing if not unique. Some are calling this a return to Orlando form - a touching look at youth and idealism, focused on two teens in the early-1960s.   For more information visit: http://www.artificial-eye.com/film.php?cinema=gingerandrosa&plugs&qt=true&wm=false Buy: http://www.odeon.co.uk/fanatic/film_info/m14261/Ginger_Rosa/

Little White Lies“Jumbled but hearfelt...” The boldness of intent never translates into particularly lucid or moving cinema, and a climactic screaming match...not only comes as something of a weak denouement, but seems to undermine the film's cautionary thesis...

The Quietus“Bombs, babies, boys...” Not explored in nearly enough depth to render them as urgent and interesting as they deserve to be. This isn't helped by occasionally clunky dialogue, which is in turn compounded by some aggravatingly unconvincing English accents...

Guardian“Delicate and intelligent...” A lovely, open performance from 14-year-old Elle Fanning, playing a troubled British teenager at the time of the October missile crisis in 1962, lifts this movie from Sally Potter...

The Arts Desk“A terrifically visually lively film...” It may also be her most personal film considering that she was Elle Fanning’s age in 1962. 'Ginger & Rosa' is, at its best, a deft balance of small and large scale tragedy, infused with rust and spice...

The Observer“Strikes false notes...” The dialogue is flat, the staging inert, the performances uneasy and the accents of the imported American actors uncertain. A big disappointment...

Evening Standard“I found myself hoping that the end was nigh...” Fanning, who was only 13 when the film was shot, proves fresh and fluid in the lead; no wonder she’s being talked up as an Oscar contender. Nivola is equally good...

Empire“Despite some strong moments, fails to really convince...” The girly bonding scenes ring true, a semi-incestuous melodrama doesn’t and the big show-down is nail-biting stuff. But this suffers from mannered dialogue exchanges...

Total Film “Spearheaded by a strikingly self-assured turn from Elle Fanning...” Shrewdly weaves the domestic drama... against the backdrop of nuclear paranoia and social change, but at times allows her dialogue to shift from smart to on-the-nose...

Time Out“An intimate, intense coming-of-age drama...” An emotionally meaty film. But it’s let down by some earnest, patience-draining philosophising and poetry-reading...

The Telegraph“Elle Fanning comes of age with a luminous and astute central performance...” Period flavour is vital: the milieu feels far more lived in than it did in Lone Scherfig’s An Education, which this somewhat resembles and wholly outshines...
