Magic Mike
Released: 11/07/2012
General Release
Step-up, Beastly, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days - it's fair to say that Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey haven't exactly got the most impressive collective track record. However, from Oscar-winning director Stephen Soderbergh, this look at Tampa Bay strippers (sparked by Tatum's own experiences) is by various accounts very far from terrible.

The Observer“A raunchy but still essentially chaste tale...” In fact the film isn't especially original and takes few real risks. When the stripping has to stop there is always an opaque veil in the form of a posing pouch or leather jock strap to bring an acceptable pudeur to unacceptable pudenda...
.
Radio Times“More than banana hammocks and vigorous thrusting...” Beautifully shot and skilfully acted, and Tatum, in a genuinely star-making role, reveals not only glutes smooth enough to make your average baby green with envy but also an almost irresistible screen charm...
.
Guardian“A well-handled, engaging, lightweight picture...” Oddly, Magic Mike somehow looks like a much darker and more challenging movie than is actually the case...
.
Little White Lies“Manages to retain gentle humanity and deep anguish...” A product of a time where the summer of love is well and truly over. It’s a coming-of-age story written on sandpaper about the bleak uncertainty of young adulthood, and the realisation that some dreams never will come true....
.
Time Out“Soderbergh brings his grungy A-game to male stripping...” The dance sequences are hilarious and shamelessly aimed at the girls’- night-out crowd. Admittedly, the script is a little routine and lazy in the Hollywood boy-meets-girl mould. But Soderbergh grasps the campness of this world...
.
Empire“Brilliantly written...” This is terrific entertainment with a sideline in wry melancholia and testosterone-fuelled philosophy. When it comes to versatility, you have to hand it to Steven Soderbergh. Director's having fun, but it’s still a serious picture...
.
Total Film “Out to give audiences a good time...” Best movie about dudes disrobing since Brokeback Mountain.Soderbergh lets his hair down with a frank, funny dramedy that bulges with humour, heart and smarts as McConaughey gives it everything he’s got, in a potentially gong-grabbing turn...
.
The Telegraph“Soderbergh manages something pretty special...” It’s about masculinity as something to sell, something performed, and something that may not last for ever – you’re long in the tooth at 30, in this profession. All human life is here...
