Sound Of My Voice
Released: 03/08/2012
Limited release
If US indie cinema has become a platform for cult-themed thrillers (see Martha Marcy May Marlene), this companion piece to lead actress-writer Brit Marling's Another Earth about a women claiming to be a prophet from the future, and two documentarians who infiltrate her group, should fit in well. Expect investigative journalism and a bizarre mass-cleansing scene.

The Independent“Psychodrama with a sci-fi reverb...” Having paced it carefully, the film-makers hurry through the denouement as if they'd been told to wind it up that minute. They have a surprise in store, but it's also a bit of a cheat...
.
Guardian“Fizzles out infuriatingly...” Some nice twists promise us an old-fashioned, well-made thriller. Infuriatingly, however, it doesn't arrive, and a plot strand remains untied; we are left feeling this residual mood of vague ambiguity and disquiet is supposed to make up for it...
.
SFGate“No cult classic...” 'Sound of My Voice,' writer-director Zal Batmanglij's cool-headed, stripped-bare debut feature, which - much like a half-baked crackpot cult leader - fascinates and titillates, but never quite persuades...
.
The A.V. Club“Directed with efficiency by first-timer Zal Batmanglij...” The film is a little too lean, filled with strong scenes that bump up against one another with no space to expand or resonate and an ending that’s unavoidably abrupt...
.
Little White Lies“Cleverly toys with audience expectation to the very end...” Batmanglij, rather than discard genre trappings, allows them to breathe. The puzzle of Maggie’s origins is what gives Sound of My Voice plenty of narrative tension...
.
Total Film “Lo-fi psychodrama reaps the benefits of a mesmerising female lead...” Although Another Earth came out first and hogged plaudits, Sound Of My Voice is equally as intriguing and thought-provoking, the more eerie and commercially thrilling of the two films, if not as visually confident...
.
Empire“An engrossing mystery...” Sound Of My Voice is a wholly impressive piece of work, proving that Another Earth was no fluke for Marling and announcing Batmanglij as a director to watch in the future - assuming, of course, that we have one...
