The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Released: 12/03/2010
General Release
The first of a Swedish trilogy based on Steig Larrson’s ubiquitous novels. Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace) is the female computer hacker-turned-detective with a preference for body art and a number of grisly murders to solve. Probably best to see this before the inevitable Hollywood remake.

Guardian“A must for the existing fanbase...” This film is probably too long, and it's only after the first hour that the narrative engines are properly revved, but director Niels Arden Oplev really socks it over. A must for the existing fanbase...
.
The Times“The film’s main asset is unquestionably Noomi Rapace...” The melancholy grey-blue half-light of northern Sweden in winter and the scary savagery of Rapace are two elements that will inevitably be missing in any Hollywood remake...
.
The Independent“Dabbles in some pretty dark material...” The direction is mostly tight, and the crime-busting combination of unassuming middle-aged geezer and taciturn goth heroine (who's as useful with a nine-iron as she is with a computer) will have an across-the-board appeal...
.
Little White Lies“Faithful to a fault...” Has all the ingredients of a solid mystery, but lacks the extra dimension of strong characters and convincing psychology. The scenes of rape and sexual violence in both film and book are as salacious as they are sensationalist...
.
Total Film “Consider us tantalised...” Great characters, strapping story, ominous ambience and a phenomenal lead performance: the hype is fully justified...
.
Variety“The biggest international phenom to emerge from Sweden since Abba...” Watching a whole Pandora's box of past fascist and religious atrocities slowly fall into place remains fascinating. And as a whodunit rather than a noir, "Girl" ranks as a more-than-workmanlike Nordic crimer...
.
Time Out film“A solid, enjoyable but emotionally unengaging detective story...” At heart this is a traditional thriller, down to a series of convenient and underwhelming last-act revelations. For fans of Larsson’s books this could be the highlight of the cinemagoing year...
.
Empire“The most influential female thriller lead since Jodie Foster’s Clarice...” No wonder these characters have been so resonant in Europe, where the books and films have already been huge hits. This is a franchise express you’ll want to get aboard now.The best Euro action heroine since Anne Parillaud’s Nikita...
.
The Telegraph“Rapace is the real star of the film...” The wintry photography is consistently atmospheric, the sense of cultural scabs being picked at interesting, and Rapace’s performance altogether more thrilling than any that can be imagined from Kristen Stewart or Natalie Portman...
.
View London“It's unmissable...” Brilliantly directed, beautifully shot and superbly written, this is a thoroughly gripping detective thriller with terrific performances from Nyqvist and Rapace – it's also easily one of the best films of the year...
