Jim Shaw - The Rinse Cycle

Opens: 09/11/2012 Closes: 17/02/2013 BALTIC, Gateshead
Emerging from America's illustrious CalArts in the late-1970's alongside the likes of Tony Oursler and his Destroy All Monsters bandmate Mike Kelley, Shaw's prolific body of work has seen him amass amateur paintings, document his own unconscious and start his own religion, Oism. This first large-scale survey of his career on British shores has it all. Guardian“It's a nerdy boy thing...” A giant octopus floats by, head down, dangling like a testicle. There's a lot to be getting on with in Shaw's copious oeuvre, but only so much I can take in a single visit...
