Mel Bochner - If the Colour Changes
Opens: 12/10/2012 Closes: 30/12/2012
Whitechapel Gallery, London.
His first show in 1966 was cited as ‘the first truly conceptual exhibition', so it's odd that Bochner's work is only now receiving a major survey this side of the Atlantic. The New Yorker's colourful back catalogue, including his new ‘Thesaurus' paintings, will have you questioning the limits of language and painting, and the gallery space itself.

The Observer“There are some almost classically boring works involving measurements...” Anyone with the mildest case of synaesthesia will have a jarring time of it with some of these paintings, where the same words come squeegeed in cacophonously multicoloured arrays. But something of this condition permeates the ideas behind the work..
