Michelangelo's Dream
Opens: 18/02/2010 Closes: 16/05/2010
Courtauld Gallery, London
The Dream is considered one of Michelangelo's finest drawings, and is the centrepiece of this exhibition. The celebrated work, originally created for a teenage boy he had taken a shine to, is brought together with many of the artist's other exceptional drawings and poems, as well as works by his contemporaries.

Time Out“The drawings are quite frankly erotic...” Rich and strange, in truth it escapes a definitive reading, though as testimony to Michelangelo's staggering virtuosity and complex intellect it is inarguable...
.
Guardian“If you come for the story, you will stay for the art...” Here in one room are the greatest drawings that survive from his hand. They are brought together here to release you soaring among winged, ascending and falling beings in the strange and wonderful atmosphere of Michelangelo's "chaste desire"...

this is london“The most accomplished study of the subject yet...” It is an intriguing exhibition — nine extraordinarily beautiful sheets by Michelangelo. While sharing Vasari's awe for the technique, I have always found the angel obtrusively ugly in its disproportion, its head absurdly small...
.
The Telegraph“A curatorial and scholarly triumph...” This is not a big show, and yet I have not yet begun to suggest how much it has to tell us. The curator Stephanie Buck has a knack for explaining difficult ideas with the lightest of touches...
.
New Statesman“Love, beauty and artistic genius are on display...” Rather than expressions of his longing, Michelangelo's compositions are ideograms: they feature an unprecedented combination of superb draughtsmanship and overlapping psychological, mythological and philosophical meanings...
.
The Independent“Works meant for intimate consumption...” The dozen drawings by the artist in this perfect little exhibition show a tendency to knottiness, to figures which wind around each other and contort. This is a symbol of the complexity of their meaning, their levels of encryption...
.
The Times“This is an unabashedly scholarly show...” What the drawings and copies make clearest is quite how magnificent Michelangelo’s talent was. This show works like a trumpet blast, reawakening the viewer to his inspirational powers...
.
The Observer“One of the greatest (yet smallest) shows you will ever see...” It is a lightning strike of pure imagination, like the nearly-meeting fingers of God and Adam between which one imagines the sparks leaping. Michelangelo seems to intuit, and anticipate, electricity...
