Turner and the Elements
Opens: 28/01/2012 Closes: 13/05/2012
Turner Contemporary, Margate
The recently revamped gallery celebrates its namesake. A regular visitor to Margate, Turner used the north Kent coastline as a subject throughout his revolutionary career. Split into suitably primal-sounding sections - Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Fusion - this showcases the great painter's love of the area, and his obsession with natural forces.

The Arts Desk“A visual joy and an intellectual pleasure...” The watercolours are amazingly affecting, capturing the sheer euphoria of confronting a view of scudding clouds, crashing waves, stormy skies, sunrise and sunset...
.
The Telegraph“Has any painter better transcribed the flux of the natural world?... ” Unconvinced that Turner categorised his pictures in such a manner, I lost interest in following the intricacies of the curators’ argument. The works themselves, though, are thrilling...
.
The Independent“A glorious show..” the curators this time have ignored place and gone for what makes Turner incomparable as an artist: his determination to capture nature itself in all its moods and energy...
.
Guardian“This is the Turner of mist, haar and spume...” Every image makes you wonder at the mysteries of nature: how rain hangs in the air, how the sun burns away darkness and moisture at dawn, how sea and sky mirror each other's tones...
