After a series of international successes in the film world, the late Anthony Minghella turned his talents to opera, resulting in this critically lauded version of Madam Butterfly – Puccini’s tale of a geisha girl and her undeserving American sweetheart. Now, Minghella’s otherworldly talent is honoured by its revival.

An astronaut’s paranoia may prove to be justified in this film by Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie), starring Sam Rockwell and the voice of Kevin Spacey. A sci-fi that doesn’t depend on CGI, made by a director who’s chosen not to trade on his superstar father’s name. How refreshing.
Opens: 01/07/2009 Closes: 18/07/2009
Quay House, Manchester
Music and theatre collide - but no need to fear, this is not Mamma Mia. Kicking off Manchester International Festival, Punchdrunk and Damon Albarn team up on this walk-through theatre experience, telling the story of American pop music. With five floors, special effects and music by Kronos Quartet it is apparently unsuitable for those of a nervous disposition. So keep your cool.
