US singer songwriter Melody Gardot will perform at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on April 19th, one of only three performances in the UK this year.

The 25 year old Philadelphian jazz and blues vocalist achieved worldwide success with her charming 2008 debut album Worrisome Heart, which was completed after recovery from a near fatal accident.

My One and Only Thrill, Melody’s 2009 follow-up album, was produced by Grammy Award-winning Joni Mitchell collaborator Larry Klein and released in March 2009 to immediate critical acclaim. Marking an intensely creative milestone and transcending genre distinctions to offer a haunting personal musical statement, the eleven track recording is a blend of Latin rhythms, finger-snapping blues and smouldering torch songs and has led to comparisons with contemporaries such as Norah Jones and Madeleine Peyroux.

In the Land Of The Free is out nationwide on March 26th and we have a pair of tickets available to the film’s premiere on March 24th  which includes a Q&A with special guest Robert King.

In The Land Of The Free is the story of the Angola 3.  During the 1970s, the Angola 3 protested against continued segregation, corruption and abuse facing the largely black prison population within the Louisiana penitentiary, Angola. Shortly after speaking out, Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox were subsequently convicted for the murder of a prison guard, Brent Miller.

There was no physical evidence against them. The main eye witness was bribed with a carton of cigarettes every week and promised his freedom by the warden in exchange for testifying. Another eye witness was a legally blind, mentally retarded sociopath. A bloody fingerprint from the scene was shown not to belong to Herman or Albert and yet never tested against the rest of the prison population.

Albert and Herman have now been in solitary confinement for 37 years, in which time they have spent 23 hours of each day in a 6 x 9 foot cell.  Robert King was also imprisoned in solitary confinement for 29 years; though the crime he was said to commit was an impossible act for him to perform as he was not imprisoned at Angola during the time of the crime.

The winner of the premiere tickets will also be invited to attend a Q&A session after the film in which Robert and ITLOTF director Vadim Jean will take the audience member’s questions, the winner will also receive a copy of Robert’s inspirational book From the Bottom of the Heap. “The idea behind this video was basically a "cult" or a collective of people gathered together in this house, preparing for a magical event - the golden shower at the end of the video (perhaps a not-so-subtle nod to another Hidden Cameras song...). Perhaps it is the recording of Joel's performance that brings about this event. In the end though, it's mostly just an abstract collection of images held together by this very tangential narrative. I hope people find it fun and enjoy it.
