Wildly uncool though it might be to admit to liking them, the appeal of Rodgers and Hammerstein endures, and Opera North have smashed it with their take on Carousel, which stops at the Barbican before it crosses the Channel. Last year it was voted best musical of the 20th century by Time magazine - and presumably not just by grandmas and children.
