ENO - Der Rosenkavalier

Opens: 28/01/2012 Closes: 27/02/2012 ENO London Coliseum.
ENO stage this operastar-studded production of Richard Strauss' bawdy comedy about the exploits of a European ruler's wife and her toy-boy. Reviving the 2008 production by top director David McVicar, it features original cast members including Sir John Tomlinson and Sarah Connolly. Recommended for lovers of flowery farce.

Opera Britannia“Profound psychological insight...” The staging is hideous to have to look at, managing to be cheaply drab, colourless, spatially and socially undifferentiated, and yawningly empty for much of its length: but musically things have perked up almost beyond recognition...

The Stage“Emotionally engaging production...” Amanda Roocroft, subtle, poignant and in beautiful voice, is perfect for the Marschallin - no other soprano today is better suited to the role. Sarah Connolly’s Octavian bounds with virile young passion..

The Telegraph“Keeps character and wit on the right side of mugging and farce...” Anchored in a visually elegant staging and Edward Gardner’s cannily judged conducting, the piece for once doesn’t seem overblown or too clever by half...
