Five Guys Named Moe

Opens: 04/08/2010 Closes: 02/10/2010 UK Tour

Upbeat dance numbers and plenty of jazz. This 20th anniversary revival opens in Edinburgh before returning to its beginnings at Theatre Royal Stratford East. Its creator - The Wire's Clarke Peters - takes the lead role as Nomax, directed by the distinguished Paulette Randall and with choreography by Olivier Award nominee Paul J Medford.

The Telegraph“The model of simplicity and soul...” The music - mainly from the crafty, cheeky, uproarious jazz back-catalogue of Louis Jordan - is a pleasure in itself but no one in Paulette Randall’s production puts a foot wrong...

Whatsonstage.com“The show’s a metaphor for the healing power of good music...” On the level of “party-time”, it’s pretty good, the Underbelly underpinned by Cameron Mackintosh and co-producing with the place where it all started, Stratford East, to provide a good onstage musical sextet...

The Stage“It's so much fun that it's easy to forgive its thinness...” The whole thing is slick, lively and infectiously upbeat, even if the choreography by Paul J Medford (the original Little Moe) sometimes feels a little cramped on the McEwan Hall stage...

The Independent“The book is virtually non-existent...” One of the original "have a good time" jukebox shows in the West End, and the pleasure of seeing it again is like that of seeing an old friend: familiar, heart-warming, with faults you don't mind living with for a couple of hours...

The Herald“The show still works on nostalgic affection for the music...” The whole thing feels much bigger than the sum of its parts, the arrangements are clever, the dancing slick, and the choreography more than a little camp, to the detail of Peters’s ruby sneakers...

Guardian“On its own terms it delivers...” Might be narratively thinner than a communion wafer, but along the way, there are some fantastic songs, a great band and some decent choreography in a tight space...

Financial Times“Paulette Randall’s production remains a zoot-suited slice of feelgood...” The 90-minute sprint version on show in Edinburgh loses little of substance; most compilation musicals are not exactly burdened with complex scripts...
