Julietta
Opens: 17/09/2012 Closes: 03/10/2012
ENO, The London Coliseum
Bhuslav Martinu's under-performed opera is the second in director Richard Jones's five-production residency at Sadler's Wells. World War II cast a shadow over Martinu's work, exiled as he was for his links with the Czech resistance, and Julietta's ‘Central Office of Dreams' seems entirely Nineteen-Eighty Four. Swedish soprano Julia Sorsen takes the title role. For more information visit: http://www.eno.org/see-whats-on/productions/production-page.php?itemid=2122 Buy: http://www.eno.org/see-whats-on/productions/production-page.php?itemid=2122

.
Evening Standard“Expressive and detailed...” Though attractive enough, the work may not quite deserve the status of masterpiece accorded it by its admirers, but Jones’s imagination deepens its resonances...
.
Guardian“As crisp as if it were newly minted...” As the music ricochets from one style to the next in a freely associating way, it matches the loose dramatic structure of the opera perfectly, conjuring up a world in which nothing is certain and everything is provisional...
.
Financial Times“Brought to life with breathtaking flair...” An evening’s worth of operatic recitative hatched in the artistic free-for-all that was 1930s Paris and forever condemned to sit on the edge of the repertoire...
