Mittwoch aus Licht (Wednesday from Light)
Opens: 22/08/2012 Closes: 25/08/2012
Argyle Works, Birmingham
This once-in-a-lifetime performance features four airbourne helicopters, flying musicians, Radio 1 dj Nihal and, it seems, sold out in about a day. But dont worry, you can check in online at The Space. The five-hour opera by Karlheinz Stockhausen (one of the 20th-century's great composers) is part of his Light series and has never before been staged in its entirety, unsurprisingly.

The Stage“Surreal yet often magically beautiful...” Taken as a whole this is a wildly ambitious project whose staging by Graham Vick and his vast and committed Birmingham forces is a hugely impressive achievement...
.
The Arts Desk“Helicopters disappoint...” You'd have to be pretty mean-spirited not to acknowledge that this was the work of a genius, whose playful innovations have a lot to teach contemporary opera...
.
The Telegraph“This is a magnificent show...” I was both exasperated and enchanted, bored and riveted. Best of all is the World Parliament scene: voluptuous, melismatic and polyrhythmic, it shimmers ecstatically as the delegates debate the truth about love...
.
Guardian“Wonderfully fluent and performed with tremendous panache...” What saves it all from becoming just a parade of weird images and pretentious ideas is the sheer power and grandeur of much of Stockhausen's music...
