Royal Ballet - Romeo and Juliet
Opens: 10/01/2012 Closes: 31/03/2012
ROH, London.
After a mixed response to its staging at the O2 last year, the Royal Ballet production returns to its spiritual home. Eight pairings – including favourites Carlos Acosta and Tamara Rojo – alternate as the star-crossed lovers, working the renaissance costumes and celebrated pas de deux that distinguish Kenneth MacMillan’s ever popular version.

London Dance“Choreography was often a mess...” Surprising then that, with the honourable exception of Rojo and a few other rich characterisations, this year’s opening performance appeared as rusty as an old fencing blade left mouldering in a long-forgotten scabbard...
.
The Arts Desk“Shows a choreographic dramatist of genius at work...” Richly represented the immortal, constantly retreaded young lovers, and led to a finish of powerful emotions, regenerating - yes, as if for the first time - the horror of imagining yourself alone with the dead body of your only love.
.
Ballet.co.uk“Rojo and Acosta together are a remarkable team...” The side stalls circle seats have been removed for this production and the effect here (at least from a seat in the stalls circle) is to make the surges of sound from the pit louder, more dramatic and enveloping.
.
this is london“Both principals were wonderfully supported...” Aspects of the production were less satisfying, though, especially John B Read's ever-changing lighting designs, which are now veering towards the stygian.
.
The Independent“This revival is full of insights...” Pavel Sorokin conducted a driving account of Prokofiev’s score, but there was some rough-edged playing from the orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The corps de ballet gave an engaged performance, with bouncy footwork and vivid reactions.
