Snow Queen
Opens: 08/01/2010 Closes: 17/01/2010
ENO, London Coliseum
One cannot go wrong coupling Hans Christian Andersen’s icy tale of the Snow Queen with splendidly glittering costumes. English National Ballet’s production beautifully recreates the Snow Queen’s chilly world, in which Gerda embarks on a desperate journey to save her friend Kai from the Queen’s spell.

The Telegraph“Just a fraction too polite, a little short on "wow" moments...” Begoña Cao is a hot Gypsy Girl, ENB's corps are as strong as I have ever seen them, and, despite its shortcomings, the show is a respectable winter offering..
.
The Independent“There's a shortage of momentum...” Corder gives the story little dramatic weight. There are a few mime gestures, a change of tone. The storytelling is in a hurry to get to the dancing – which is clean and academic, without being individual...
.
The Times“At times The Snow Queen feels like too much of a good thing...” The score is stupendous — vibrant music full of evocative dance resonances. Unfortunately, things go downhill from there. Yes, fairytales need neither rhyme nor reason, but they do need a stronger forward momentum than this...
.
Guardian“It's all very elegant and at moments poetic...” The long second-act ball scene, marking Kay's arrival at the Queen's court, comes with music that is just too worldly, too much fun. This is hardly a heartless frozen wilderness: it looks and sounds a whole lot more appealing than the mortal world...
.
The Stage“The 67 dancers are magnificent in this sumptous ballet...” Sarah McIlroy in the title role thrills and chills with a wicked icy gem encrusted glamour. As Gerda, Crystal Costa excels with charm and joyful dancing partnered by Yat-Sen Chang as Kay who performs his powered leaps with verve...
.
Financial Times“We watch a torrent of dancing and beautiful patterns expand...” Undeniable is the skilled traditionalism of Mark Bailey’s design and the glittering imagery of the Snow Queen’s crystal domain. But also undeniable are the moments when choreography floods the stage, dance following clever dance...
.
Ballet.co.uk“It's pretty to look at, but not much more...” The standard of the dancing is amazingly high in this production. The corps de ballet were very well synchronized and spaced; and Daria Klimentova was stunning as the Snow Queen...
