Best Coast - The Only Place
Released: 15/05/2012
Wichita
Bethany Cosentino's love affair with her native state shows no sign of souring on LP 2; title track ‘The Only Place' sounds like an advertising jingle the Californian tourist board would heartily condone. Fortunately her pop hooks appear in rude health, though she's cleaned up the scuzz which held much of the charm of her early EPs.

Rolling Stone“Cosentino dramatically steps up her vocal presence...” Melodies ring out with a new clarity thanks to producer Jon Brion, the Bacharach disciple who helped Fiona Apple and Kanye West cut their sweetest-sounding records...
.
Drowned In Sound“More of the same from Cosentino minus a few references to high times...” So what comes next for Best Coast? As you’ll have probably surmised from The Only Place’s titular lead single, the answer to this question is not a series of avant garde explorations in jazz fusion...
.
Pitchfork“A grinding sense of marks being hit while inspiration is in short order... ” Cosentino is still in fine voice, and she continues to have a warm and agreeable persona. The songs here are reasonably catchy and tend to stick with you with repeated plays...
.
The Observer“The follow-up picks up where it left off...” There are still moments of magic but it sounds like the work of a band in transition, and not necessarily for the better...
.
BBC“No longer hiding behind harmonies and production fuzz...” Bethany Cosentino is still figuring out who she is. But listening to this musically confident and lyrically unflinching second album, it's clear she's no stoner cat...
.
MusicOMH“Perfectly embodies the LA sunshine...” As a whole, the album is put together very well. The tracks lead on well from each other, the sound gradually changing and morphing throughout, but still keeping remnants of previous songs to make the changes seamless...
