Can - The Lost Tapes
Released: 19/06/2012
Mute/Spoon
Eschewing the prevailing British and American rock music of the 1970s and fronted by a Japanese hippie who claimed to sing in ‘the language of the Stone Age', Can were unique and decades ahead of their time. Excitement is rife, then, among krautrock fans as a vault of unreleased material is unleashed, with unheard music dating from 1968-1977.

Uncut“It makes PiL sound like The Moody Blues...” Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore recalled his first experience of Can as finding this notionally “rock” group coming from a place completely “outside of rock”. The Lost Tapes confirms that pleasing impression and applies it to the boxset format
.
NME“More dark magic straight from the source...” Radiohead, Primal Scream, The Fall, The Stone Roses, Kanye bloody West: the list of musicians who’ve sampled, stolen from, or simply lauded Can reads like the best bits of your record collection...
.
The Line of Best Fit“The Lost Tapes strengthens the image of Can as anti-prog...” If you’re already familiar with, say, Tago Mago (1971), Ege Bamyasi (1972) and the peerless side 1 of Future Days (1973), The Lost Tapes is absolutely essential listening.
.
Drowned In Sound“This was a quite remarkable band...” The Lost Tapes isn’t an easy album to listen to, but then that was never the case with Can. Nonetheless, as the years pass and more bands form, by default their influence grows, which makes this a fascinating addition to any collection...
.
Pitchfork“One more album as good as the good stuff...” The pity of The Lost Tapes' overambition is that it could easily be condensed to a single, first-rate album of genuinely new-to-record material...
.
BBC“Dizzily energetic and excitingly innovative...” The Lost Tapes turns out to be even rarer than its contents: a collection almost as vital as Can’s official album output...
.
The Independent“Some of the most striking, individual music ever made... ” Despite restlessly exploring hitherto untrodden musical terrain, there are precious few wasted seconds in these three hours. We shall not hear their like again...
