Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan
Released: 09/07/2012
Domino Records
On previous efforts, Dirty Projectors have asserted their musical virtuosity by assimilating influences ranging from hardcore to Afro-beat, but it sounds like they're settling into classic songwriting territory on album six. Following last years Mount Wittenburg Orca collaboration with Bjork, the Brooklyn-based progressives return with a new collection of stripped back pop.

The Arts Desk“It's tricky to pigeonhole, and it's not quite art-pop ear candy...” The melodies and lyrics keep yielding more with each listen, which suggests Longstreth was close to getting it right. These aren't "the idea of songs", or even "just songs"; they're actually "very good songs"...
.
The A.V. Club“The band conveys a warm affection with a minimalist approach...” Swing Lo Magellan has more of the peculiar pop hooks and oddly danceable arrangements that made critics swoon over 2009’s Bitte Orca...
.
The Quietus“"Progressive" doesn't necessarily have to be a dirty word in 2012...” From the bone-dry snare drums and folk guitar of the title track to the erratic pinball machine percussion on 'See What She's Seeing', SLM derives some startling effects from the minutiae of its arrangements...
.
Guardian“Rhythms are fidgety, time signatures are tricksy...” The best moments of Swing Lo Magellan transcend whatever intentions their author may have had, as amazing songs are wont to do.
.
Drowned In Sound“The arrangements remain decidedly off-kilter...” Swing Lo Magellan, then – deadly serious even at its most eccentric, willfully awkward even at its most accessible, dense and intricate even at its most freewheeling. Same as it ever was.
.
The Line of Best Fit“Simple and straightforward only in comparison with the band’s past works.” Swing Lo Magellan provides an answer to the mystery of how to expand a band’s appeal without shredding any of the idiosyncrasies that made them stand out in the first place...
.
Pitchfork“Well-made but certainly not over-produced...” In a society of by-the-second news updates and endless information all the time, it's strangely reassuring to feel as if a songwriter who's been endlessly interrogated, analyzed, and publicized is still something of a stranger...
.
MusicOMH“New levels of unpretentious eloquence positively flourish...” In reigning in the more unpredictable aspects of his music, Longstreth has managed to retain the essence that has made Dirty Projectors such a continually challenging and invigorating creative outfit over the years...
