Everything Everything - Arc

Released: 14/01/2013 Sony

Frontman Jonathan Higgs recently said his Manchester four-piece have approached their second record by attempting to sound ‘normal'. Perhaps that will mean a more cohesive follow up to their, er, ‘busy' 2011 Mercury-nominated debut Man Alive, though they're still among the UK's best art-pop hopes, as infectious new single ‘Kemosabe' proves. NME“Moving towards something extraordinary...” More focused, more restrained, less prone to tangential distractions. It’s an incremental leap rather than an exponential one, if you want to couch it in those terms, but it’s founded on a jarring contradiction: pop’s young futurists...

Guardian“The sound of a band working out who they want to be...” Jerky opener Cough Cough may showcase them at their most self-consciously wacky, but The Peaks is at the opposite end of the spectrum, attempting the kind of stadium melancholia beloved of Elbow or Coldplay...

The Observer“Another tour de force...” The sublime Undrowned and The House is Dust could easily slip unnoticed on to Radiohead's In Rainbows, while Radiant sounds like it has one eye on the nation's arenas...

The Independent“Everything Everything are making a grab for the mainstream..” With its ever so slightly grating falsettos and R&B-influenced structures, Arc is built with daytime radio in mind as much as the indie disco. You can hear the words now, too...

The Line of Best Fit“A zany shade of indie to be taken very seriously...” This is a thundering response to sceptics of their scattered, canny style and those warning of the pitfalls to avoid in second LPs. They’ve exceeded expectations, delivering an incredible start to 2013 and ensuring a legacy for themselves...

Drowned In Sound“Will reward and delight in equal measure...” It’s still a sexy, artful, ADD mess. But this time, on Arc, it’s their mess, and Everythig Everything’s big brainful of ideas is panoramic, rather than parasitic...

The Skinny“They remain firmly a product of their times...” The sum is not the work of a band intent on playing it safe, but neither is it quite the adventure that their outlook suggests...

The Arts Desk“Suggests the band themselves aren’t sure of who they are...” It’s difficult to stand still while paddling furiously, but that’s what Arc sounds like – a band with a million-and-one ideas and no overriding sense of unity...

BBC“A considered bid for the mainstream...” There are still occasions when Everything Everything sound like a riot in a melody factory. And they still sound furiously intelligent, like Manchester’s anti-Oasis...

Clash Music“A fistful of songs for the masses...” Big, bold and bristling with confidence. It is the sound of a band working out what they are good at and turning the quality control up to eleven...
