Mission of Burma - Unsound

Released: 09/07/2012 Fire Records
These veteran Boston post-punkers led the way for many in the fledgling indie rock scene of the 1980s. Despite this, the band only released one full-length album before splitting up in 1983. Their reunion looks to be making up for lost time, as they follow 2009's The Sound The Speed The Light with a fifth long-player. The Quietus“Brainy and razor sharp...” Mission Of Burma were always unashamedly a rock band at heart unlike their more overtly anti-rockist British peers, albeit a brainy, razor sharp, and abrasive one, which is fine a thing as any to be...

NME“The post-punk luminaries don't disappoint...” Prescott’s gang-recruiting shouts and Miller wielding his guitar like a broken weapon. Shellac’s Bob Weston throws disorientating tape-loop curveballs throughout, further disturbing Burma’s thrilling clatter, which shames bands half their age..

Pitchfork“They end up further confirming their consistency... ” Their core sound remains as it ever was: a punk-derived mix of brains and muscle, as obsessed with angles and time-shifts as battle-cry choruses.

The A.V. Club“The tunes are still there—mostly...” Unsound continues that cranky streak with little variation, but where the previous comeback albums have roared, Unsound feels dull, uneven, and a little bored...

allmusic“One of the most exciting and eye-opening albums they've made to date...” Dozens of current bands would be proud to conjure up beautiful waves of noise the way Miller does here...

Drowned In Sound“As solid as any album they’ve put out...” Baby bands take note: If you insist on making it sound like you’ve recorded on a shitty four track instead of digitally, see if you can’t ape a few tape loops as well...

Guardian“They are certainly a band making the most of their extra time...” Running the gamut from Gang of Four-style jerky, punky funk to grunge to Pere Ubu/Van Der Graaf Generator's controlled chaos, each song is packed with hooks, tunes and a sense of untamed glee...

MusicOMH“It feels as if Steve Albini has popped round with a home hypnotism set...” Do we really have to tell you to buy this record? Miller sacrificied his goddamn ears for you...

The Line of Best Fit“The excellence continues...” With their legacy already secured MoB didn’t even have to come back and make any more records, but in creating Unsound they’ve just gone and made one of the albums of 2012...
