Tegan and Sara - Heartthrob
Released: 11/02/2013
Vapor/Warner Bros
Canadian twins Tegan and Sara have spent the interim since 2009’s Sainthood recording collaborations with DJ Tiësto, David Guetta and Morgan Page, so the sugary pop (à la Kelly Clarkson) of new single ‘Closer’ shouldn’t come as too much of a sucker punch for fans of the indie duo. Heartthrob is album seven, but their first with a (potentially alienating) mainstream sound.

The A.V. Club“Takes some getting used to...” At times, Heartthrob can feel a bit too polished because of such manicured instrumentation. But overall, Tegan And Sara make the album work, mainly because their songwriting is more sophisticated...
.
NME“Big, spangly electro hits...” The results could have been messy, but ‘Heartthrob’ is a triumph. ‘I Was A Fool’ and ‘Drove Me Wild’ are instantly brilliant, recalling ABBA and Gwen Stefani, and their lyrics keep us guessing with tangled sheets here, a pouting ex there.
.
Consequence of Sound“Genius levels of fun...” Heartthrob invokes somber, marble notebook dumps as truthfully as it portrays its lustier foil. “Closer” is, to paraphrase Lena Dunham, a “tits-out” tribute to not getting to know someone...
.
allmusic“The gamble pays off...” One would have to go a long way to find a pop record that is as easy to swallow, yet contains such depth. Welcome to the mainstream, Tegan and Sara...thanks for classing the place up a bit...
.
MusicOMH“Dreadfully overproduced...” Heartthrob falls down more often than not because the songs capture the immaturity of its target audience a little too well. Like a teenage crush, its appeal can pass just as quickly as it starts...
.
Pitchfork“Its misfires are few, if pronounced...” On Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara sing about solitude, regret, and self-loathing alongside romance, but most of its 10 songs feel amazing. That's not a sign of cognitive dissonance, but their considerable abilities...
.
Drowned In Sound“Very, very close to being perfect...” It’s like the Moldy Peaches coming back sounding like No Doubt. But anyone listening with indier-than-thou sour grapes is missing out - it's their most satisfying, self contained and sharpest record in years...
.
The Arts Desk“Might take the duo in new directions, but the heart remains...” These are deeply sad songs, yes - but also empowering in their own way. Like Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” before them, they’re the soundtrack to that part of the breakup where it’s fine to sing into your hairbrush and dance yourself better..
.
The Telegraph“Big, glossy pop...” The kind of pop smart parents would like their daughters to buy. If John Hughes was still alive and making high-school films, I’m sure songs from Heartthrob would be on the soundtrack...
.
The Observer“An unabashed attempt to make a record of arena-filling angst pop...” It packs a real punch; scuffed edges have been planed smooth in favour of a synthy, turbo-charged sound, thanks in part to Ke$ha producer Greg Kurstin, and hooky, histrionic choruses come on like narcotic rushes...
