The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Aufheben
Released: 30/04/2012
Driving rhythms and swirling psychedelia abound from a band who've been looking back to the 1960s for eleven albums now, in a good way. Anton Newcombe's electronic music feels more discreet than on 2010's Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?, with former member Matt Hollywood and ex-Spacemen 3 bassist Will Carruthers lending a more eclectic, consistent sound.

The Line of Best Fit“You may find a record to love here...” More of the same; not quite of the high standard the band are capable of at their best (Methadrone, Thank God for Mental Illness), but as enjoyable as they’ve ever been...

Drowned In Sound“There are (at least) two Anton Newcombes...” It’s not really a surprise. Beyond the self-destruction, BJM have always produced great songs. That’s why they are still going strong after 20-odd years, and why you wouldn’t put it passed them still doing it in another 20 years too...
.
NME“His best album since 2003’s ‘…And This Is Our Music’...” Nearly 10 years since the infamous documentary DIG!, The Brian Jonestown Massacre continue to plough their whimsical psychedelic furrow...
.
MusicOMH“Where Western bohemia meets transcendental meditation...” As usual, Newcombe's laid-back vocals are set well back in the multi-layered instrumental mix, but even when you can hear the lyrics they are pretty indecipherable anyway - you just have let yourself go with the mood-flow of the music...
.
Pitchfork“the band's most consistent and sonically lustrous album in years...” As its title suggests, Aufheben-- a German term with several, oppositional meanings-- marks another change of scene and personnel for Newcombe, this time to East Berlin with a multicultural cast of session musicians...
