Twin Shadow - Confess
Released: 09/07/2012
4AD
Dominican-born George Lewis Jr. rose to critical acclaim in 2010 with Forget, a meticulously crafted debut that re-imagined the finer points of 80s synth pop (Echo and The Bunnymen, not Spandau Ballet) with heavily layered, modern results. Allegedly inspired by an adolescent motorcycle accident, the LA-based artist's follow-up smacks of escapism.

The Quietus“Tired, joyless music...” Twin Shadow implies split personality, duplicity, an exploration of the dark strangeness of love. No such mystery in this deeply unerotic, unsexual record, sung by a Ken Doll pin-up for the Instagram generation...
.
Slant Magazine“His sophomore effort is much more emotional and muscular...” Confess jettisons Forget's sense of caution for adventure and a greater spectrum of genres, making it an altogether superior effort, and one of the few modern indie releases that handles its '80s reverence with dexterity...
.
The A.V. Club“All reckless youth and asphalt burns...” It’s a strong follow-up to Forget and a seasonal album that will last long after the summer ends...
.
The Observer“Influenced by dawn motorbike rides rather than nocturnal regrets...” He's shameless in going for the pop jugular at times – see the brazen key change on Be Mine Tonight – but there's a tricksy intelligence at work here too...
.
MusicOMH“As the cover image suggests, this album is Twin Shadow baring his soul...” Perhaps the most interesting track sonically on Confess is the tribal drum based RnB rhythm of Patient. This is the sound of '90s RnB taken to a wholly different plane...
.
Pitchfork“Leather jackets, sullen glowers, salvation through hit-making... ” He's the cocky, successful, brutally honest lothario who almost always gets his comeuppance in cinema and is verboten in indie rock. But this is pop music where the bad guy wins.
.
The Line of Best Fit“The romance of R‘n’B fuel-injected with the passion of rock ‘n’ rol” It might not be as subtle as you were expecting, but it’ll bash you over the head until you succumb completely...
.
Drowned In Sound“It’s wholly, wholly brilliant...” Twin Shadow’s first record, 2010’s Forget, was a satin-smooth razzle-dazzle of New Wave grooves. This time around, Lewis Jr. has added heart to the spectacle...
.
Clash Music“George Lewis Jr continues on his mission...” For most of ‘Confess’ the experiment works; check out the euphoric chorus of the opening ‘Golden Light’, the paranoid pulse of ‘Five Seconds’, or the nagging earworm of ‘Run My Heart’...
.
BBC“There's no dream-pop pussyfooting from Lewis this time...” This approach makes for a Twin Shadow record that might be brutal at times but also smarts with impressively high-octane pop...
