Veronica Falls - Waiting For Something To Happen
Released: 04/02/2013
Bella Union
How can guitar music be dead when indie pop is clearly immortal? Here’s proof, the second record by London’s Veronica Falls, who have an impressive knack for infectious if melancholic tunes in the style of Black Tambourine or Teenage Fanclub. ‘Everybody’s Changing’, for example, might be taken from the latter’s masterpiece Grand Prix. Guitar pop, uncannily as we know it.

The 405“A noticeable step up from their debut...” They may carry some of the musical hallmarks of the genre – the C86-guitars, boy/girl melodies and Phil Spector drumming is usually the best part of the twee aesthetic – but the lyrics don't follow their simplistic lead...
.
NME“A couple of decent moments...” A fey-pop selection box that leaves out the gothic grit and garage-infused rabble of early tracks like ‘Found Love In A Graveyard’ and ‘Beachy Head’. Take ‘Everybody’s Changing’, a track that’s more twee than Summer Camp in a cardigan
.
MusicOMH“When it comes to passion and excitement, they’re bottom of the class...” A sort of highly polished ode to indie circa ’86-’94 – there’s a lot to get out of it, and occasionally it shines, but the studious approach Veronica Falls take can extinguish any fire that might be crackling in their bellies...
.
The Independent“A sunburst of yearning, tedium and expectation...” There's a keen appreciation of shifting cultural mores in “Everybody's Changing”; and teen desire is quirkily explored in “Buried Alive”, where a curious obsession rides the catchiest of melodies...
.
Clash Music“Not quite the children of the C86 revolution they’ve been labelled...” Like a group of school friends playing in a band. Neither offensive nor inventive this album is a bit like a bag of Rainbow Drops; thrillingly pretty but ultimately full of air...
.
BBC“Elephantine sing-along hooks...” It's endearing, no doubt, but will this material lend itself to the canon? Or is it just a bit of immediate fun? Who knows? Scornful critics speculated that most Britpop was disposable in the first place – yet here we are, still musing about it...
.
Drowned In Sound“Utterly compelling...” Bursting with deftly polished harmonies, guitars that fizz and jangle in and out of focus and tunes all wrapped in a timeless veneer evoking the past five decades, it makes a mockery of the so-called difficult second album...
.
The Line of Best Fit“A darn good pop record...” You should treasure the time you spend in its company. In years to come, it’ll come up in boozy, dusty-eyed conversations and you’ll look back fondly, maybe with a nostalgic sniff and a warm smile...
.
This Is Fake DIY“Assured, confident, and infectious...” For a record built upon the simplicity of of the three-minute pop song it possesses a staggering amount of depth that encourages repeat plays, opening itself up further each time. A window into aimless early adulthood never sounded so good...
.
Guardian“An unexpected and wonderful treat...” Talk about stepping up. Rack one's brains and it's still a struggle to come up with hard to think of an album of indiepop – in the most purist sense of the term – anywhere near as good as the second from Veronica Falls...
