Macbeth

Opens: 05/09/2012 Closes: 06/10/2012 Crucible, Sheffield Theatres
Audience popularity is one reason for the historic curse of ‘the Scottish play': the theory goes that it was staged as a surefire hit by theatres in dire economic straits. That's not the case in Sheffield, however, where after a £15 million refurbishment artistic director Daniel Evans heads the Crucible's renaissance, which continues with this unfashionably sparse production. Financial Times“A rapid but decisive journey...” In barely 20 lines, Macbeth transforms from the gibbering wreck just now menaced by the ghost of Banquo to the grimly determined villain who accepts and prosecutes his role with the portentous remark: "We are yet but young in deed."

Exeunt“Visceral and exciting pieces of theatre...” By Daniel Evans’ own exceptional high standards, this is probably the least successful of the three Shakespeare adaptations that he has brought to Sheffield to date. It has its powerful moments and its potent performances but they are all too few.

Whatsonstage.com“A traditional, period version...” After a slightly hammy start from some rather predictable "secret, black, and midnight hags", the production takes off, largely thanks to the sterling performances of Geoffrey Streatfield and Claudie Blakley as Mr and Mrs M.

The Stage“Just a classic tale, told in classical style...” It’s a solid, if unspectacular performance.Which, in the end, sums up this Macbeth. It’s lit beautifully, the staging in the round (and basically around the witches’ cauldron) is a nice touch, and the supporting cast... are all on good form.

The Independent“A series of scintillating moments...” Daniel Evans said he wanted to use the setting to explore the darker side of the human psyche through 360 degrees and engulf the audience in the character’s psychological complexities. He succeeded on both fronts...

Guardian“Takes a bizarre turn...” For most of its duration, this in-the-round staging goes the same way: a rugged, well-paced, early medieval Macbeth with lots of gore and some fine supernatural effects...

The Telegraph“The problem is Lady Macbeth...” It is not until the appearance of spirited Lady Macduff, full of courage and pathos, that we feel the horror that should permeate the whole play. There are moments of dark beauty and power, but they are too few, and come too late...
