Opens: 13/01/2011 Closes: 02/04/2011
Arts Theatre, London
Nick Corley directs this telling of the legendary folk musician’s story. Woody Guthrie’s music mirrored American life and spoke up for the common man throughout times of great hardship, most notably during the Great Depression. Broadway veteran David Lutken stars as the fascinating – and often tragic – singer.

Time Out“The downhome approach works brilliantly...” Maybe Guthrie simply doesn't loom large enough in our Pantheon, but I felt a rethink for a UK audience could have brought a bit of much-needed steel to this piece, though there is a tremendous heart at its centre...

this is london“The music is snappy, humorous and politically subversive...” Woody Sez is the very opposite of an ostentatious, glitzy musical. Instead it's a well-crafted, enjoyable homage to an artist who deserves to be better known. It will appeal tremendously to Guthrie's fans, and should win him a few more...

The British Theatre Guide“The production is low-key and easy going...” Those who don’t listen to folk music the show may just prove to be a gentle and pleasant evening out, but for those who do this is a stirring night of talent and morality. There’s a spirit about Guthrie - in the defiant way he stood up for the little guy...
.
The Stage“Less of a musical and more of a tribute concert...” The Arts has become a notoriously difficult theatre in which to place productions but there is something decidedly honest and unpretentious about Woody Sez that should appeal to even the most cynical audiences...
.
Whatsonstage.com“Even the spoons make an appearance...” Contains enough wit, music and brevity to appeal to young and old alike, and whilst economic and political hardship is still an everyday issue, this revisiting of Woody Guthrie's musical legacy seems perfect timing to introduce another generation...
.
Guardian“Stirringly captures the rebellious spirit of Guthrie's times...” The terrific on-stage quartet, playing a variety of instruments, some of which I've never seen before, whip up quite a storm in a joyful, foot-tapping show that is part-concert, part-biography. Like Guthrie, this is a plain, unembroidered piece...
